Energy Auditor BPI Exam Prep

Designed for participants who are prepared to challenge the BPI Energy Auditor Exam, this 2-day course will entail a review of exam-specific information, the types of questions commonly included in the exam and provide participants with the opportunity to take a practice exam.

This course prepares qualified students to take the Home Energy Professional Energy Auditor certification exam. Students will review the types of questions that will be asked during the written and field exams and take one final exam assessing their Energy Auditor skills.

Students who do not have the necessary REA certifications or BPI BA-P and PA-T should not take this course

​

This is a fast-paced class in which students will review critical topics.  This class will not cover topics in depth.

 

Necessary skills to pass the exam include:  

  • Conducting a precise energy audit of a building 

  • Collecting the required data to create a comprehensive report on the energy consumption of a building 

  • Creating a detailed work order outlining the benefits and pay back of recommended energy conservation measures 

  • Demonstrating knowledge of specifications and standards 

  • Performing building and safety diagnostics 

  • Recording/reporting findings and concerns  

  • Communicating effectively with a client

 

Upon successful completion of this course, each student will receive a certificate of completion. Student learning will be assessed using quizzes, instructor observation, and field activities and an exam. This assessment informs the instructors and students of areas requiring additional improvement.

BPI HEP Energy Auditor written and field exams are held after the training and will be scheduled individually with each candidate.

What you will review/demonstrate: 

Students will demonstrate the use of the following equipment to diagnose homes for safety and efficiency:  

  • Blower Door 

  • Duct Blaster Pressure 

  • Exhaust Fan Flow Meter 

  • Combustion Analyzer 

  • Combustible Gas Leak Detector  

  • Ambient CO Monitor

Students will conduct: 

  • A precise interior and exterior energy audit of a building 

  • Combustion appliance testing 

​

The instructor will take the students through the BPI EA Field Guide to understand the skills and information necessary to pass the exam.

Prerequisites* 

  • Certification : BPI Building Analyst Professional (BA-P) certification, or REA certification and/or have extensive related industry experience. 

  • Students should be competent in basic mathematics, construction terminology, and possess basic computer operation skills prior to attending this training.  

  • Students seeking the HEP Energy Auditor Certification must meet specific work experience prerequisites.

*A detailed list of prerequisites can be found on the BPI website. Students seeking the HEP Energy Auditor Certification must apply directly with BPI and receive approval to take the exams. The BPI Approval Letter must be provided to the Oregon Training Institute prior to taking any exams. The application and instructions for applying may be found on the BPI website. 

 

Physical Requirements 

  • Physical Requirements: Sit or stand for long periods of time. 

  • Ability to access attics and crawlspaces. 

  • During class time we will be in a warehouse where temperatures can fluctuate according to the weather.  Dress in layers. 

  • During lab time, we recommend wearing closed-toed shoes and clothes that can get dirty, stained and cover all skin (long-sleeved shirt and long pants). 

 

What to Know Before I Go? 

  • Students will perform mock comprehensive interior and exterior energy audits of a home or the OTI combustion lab.  

  • Content retention will be assessed with a written examination at the end of the course.  Successful students will correctly answer a minimum of 70% of questions on the exam.   

  • Digital workbooks will be provided to the students before class via the "Current Students" page on OTI’s website.  You will need to download the workbook and other reference materials before class starts, and you're welcome to print the workbook and reference materials or access them digitally during class. Some exercises may require internet access to complete fully.   • This course is eligible for BPI CEUs.
