Thank you for your interest in the Oregon Training Institute’s Energy Conservation and Weatherization Internship. We are committed to providing our interns with the cutting-edge instruction and hands-on experience necessary to excel in a weatherization career

The Oregon Training Institute is a leading player in the field of energy conservation and weatherization training. We are committed to reducing the energy burden, cutting energy costs, and improving the comfort health and safety for income-qualifying individuals in the state. 

 

Given the demand for weatherization assistance specialists in Oregon, OTI offers a paid 10-12 week Energy Conservation and Weatherization Internship in multiple locations throughout the state to include Portland, Salem, Albany and (soon) Bend.

Participating in the OTI Energy Conservation and Weatherization Internship does not guarantee future employment. Internship participants are employed by CAPO on a limited and temporary basis.

Internship Overview

​

As an Energy Conservation and Weatherization Intern, you will have the unique opportunity to:

  • Learn from industry professionals: Work closely with experts in the field who will mentor and guide you throughout your internship.

  • Gain hands-on experience: You will be matched with a contractor to implement weatherization measures in the field.

  • Contribute to a greener world: Be a part of a mission-driven organization that is dedicated to serving Oregonians and our world.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Attend trainings to prepare you for your internship placement. 

  • Work beside contractors to implement energy-efficient solutions. Some examples include:

    • Ceiling, wall and floor insulation

    • Minor home repairs (related to reducing energy)

    • Sealing air leaks

    • Improving ventilation

    • Sealing windows and doors

  • Collaborate with other professionals in the field of weatherization.

  • Be punctual, responsible and reliable.

 

Qualifications:

  • Enthusiasm and curiosity for weatherization and energy conservation.

  • Motivated to progress through all 3 phases of the internship.

  • The ability to work well in a team environment.

  • No previous trades or building experience needed.

  • The desire to learn skills and techniques in construction basics and weatherization.

  • Individuals of all ages and backgrounds welcome and encouraged to apply.

The Details

​

OTI is hosting 3 cohorts in 2025: 

Cohort I: March 31 - June 20 

Cohort II: June 30 - September 12 

Cohort III: September 22 - December 12

​

Phase I: (6 weeks): Onboarding, in-house training and then hands-on supervised work with a contractor. Starting wage: $18.20. 

  • Certifications: OSHA 10, Lead-Based Paint Renovator, Health & Safety Mold and Moisture Value of Health & Safety course: 1K (interns receive this course for free). 

                     Successful interns will be invited to participate in Phase II. 

Phase II (1 week): Intensive retrofit installer training. Wage increase to: $20.70 

  • Certifications: REA Retrofit Installer for Mobile Homes; REA Retrofit Installer for Stick-Built Homes. Value of courses: 7K (interns receive these courses for free).

                       Successful interns will be invited to participate in Phase III. 

Phase III (4 weeks): Energy auditor job shadowing, mentoring, training and testing. Wage increase to: $23. 

  • Certification: REA Energy Analyst

​OTI accepts applications year-round. Staff begins reviewing applications 4 weeks before each cohort begins with interviews scheduled shortly thereafter.
